Kinda Funny - "Inspired?" story

Ok. . .so sometimes on Sunday mornings when I'm getting ready for church, I want to listen to Napster, but I sometimes feel like I should be listening to "church" music on Sunday mornings. So - the last two weeks, I've listened to Napster's top Christian/Gospel songs. Well. . .so both weeks, I've heard "East to West" by Casting Crowns. This morning, while I was getting ready, I (SORTA) listened to the words. This is what I heard: "You know how far it is from east to west. . .when God hands you the rudder." (Or something like that. . .)

So, I'm getting ready and I'm trying to analyze that. . .cause at first it didn't really make sense to me, cause I'm thinking, but the rutter has nothing to do with the distance. . .but. . .yes it does. I started thinking deeper. . .the rudder controls the direction of the boat/ship/whatnot, so a
little turn of the rudder eventually makes a HUGE difference in the path of the boat, which COULD cause you to add a LOT of distance in your quest to get from east to west. SOOooooo then I take it one step further in my over-analyitical-try-to-learn-something-today brain and I relate that to how we often pray for help to get from point a to point b. . .and this is good. We should pray for help. But - God has given us the rudder, and while He will be there to help us, we determine the direction of our vessel.

So- I'm feeling all inspired (and you know, I still believe that I was). . .we got out of Sacrament meeting early (after 2 talks, and 2 members of the bishopric trying to fill the time). . .so. . .I shared my thought processes with the primary kids (even though I knew it would probably go over their heads. . .I thought maybe some of them would get it; and perhaps the teachers. . .). I
did acknowledge that those might not have even been the words. . .
SOOoooo onto the FUNNY part. So - I look up the words to the song tonight, and re-listen to it. The ACTUAL lyrics are:

"Cause you know just how far the East is from the West
From one scarred hand to the other"

Yeah. . .the lesson I learned actually has NOTHING to do with that particular song.
That song is about redemption, repentance, the atonement, etc. . . not about rutters at all. :)
Oh well. I still know that what I learned is true, so it's all good.

From
Thomas S. Monson,“Sailing Safely the Seas of Life,”
Ensign
,Jul 1999,2 - -

"Like the vital rudder of a ship, we have been provided a way to determine the direction we travel. The lighthouse of the Lord beckons to all as we sail the seas of life. Our home port is the celestial kingdom of God. Our purpose is to steer an undeviating course in that direction. A man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder—never likely to reach home port. To us comes the signal: Chart your course, set your sail, position your rudder, and proceed.

As with the ship, so it is with man. The thrust of the turbines, the power of the propellers are useless without that sense of direction, that harnessing of the energy, that directing of the power provided by the rudder, hidden from view, relatively small in size but absolutely essential in function."

I'm trying to figure out the direction that I should take. This comes up for a number of reasons:

  • Finished the Masters. Now what?
  • Am back not in a relationship. Now what?
  • Our school system is changing the elementary schools next year completely, and while I have been told what they THINK I will be doing, I have no concrete information.
  • Various friends and family's relationships are dissolving. . . .

There's a good bit of confusion for me, and I'm glad to know where to turn to. Even if I don't have all the answers!

I think it was yesterday in sacrament meeting (or maybe at the baptism) when someone was talking about the Holy Spirit guiding us to understand what we read, what we hear, or even helping us to hear what He would like us to hear to teach us. Maybe I made that up, but I do think I heard it yesterday, and it lends some strength to your good impression from lyrics that weren't really there.
